What I Do for Living

If you read the my “about us” page, then you will read that I think my current job is interesting. You may have a  question, why? Many people hate their job and want to move to other company with higher position and higher salary. Many people don’t like their boss and just want to escape from it. Then, why an employee who work as an environment practitioner like me think that my job is interesting? In this post, I’m going to reveal some of my “secret” for you.

I work for TOTAL E&P INDONESIE, it’s a French Oil and Gas Company. It’s not the biggest in the world, and for sure Chevron is bigger than us. I work on site right now, as an Environment Supervisor. You might think, “What the hell an Environment Guy doing there?” (say it with the accent of Texan guy, like the guy that I usually meet on the rig – ship used for drilling a well). I would say, “Hey, the world is changing now! If a company just think about their production, then they will be left behind.” People start talking about environment, green living, green building, 3R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle). The company needs someone like me who can take care their environment performance, so the boss would be able to say , “Hey look, I have an environmental friendly company”. And I bet that they would be very proud to say that. It’s not just about environment awareness, but in the end it’s about money. Everything is about image. Green company brings good image to the public. Good image will bring you more money.

I’m not going to move to another company, unless my online business has already been a solid business for me or suddenly, I find a way to be a person like Robert T. Kiyosaki. Both of them are possible for me, I believe it.

Back to the subject, why I like my job.

• I don’t work in the office. I work on site. I meet more people with different educational background. If we conduct a meeting, we have it outdoor. What could be better than that?
• The bosses are great. I would say, the approach is little bit different than the bosses in the office. They understand what happen on site. They have many field experience, so they know sometimes “bad things” happen.
• I think my position is giving positive influence for the people. It’s not just about contributing something to the company, but it’s about giving something to the community. We do HSE talk regularly, there, we can talk about any topic about HSE. And any material, I think, would improve the personal knowledge of every employee.
• I work on on and off duty basis. I work for 2 weeks and got the vacation for 2 weeks. For those who work in the office, you have only 2 days off in a week. It’s not really enjoyable when you have to go on site, because you have to leave your family, but when you get the off duty period, hurray..! This is the time to develop the blog

That’s what I think about my day job. For sure, you can always find hundreds of reasons to hate your job, but on the other hand, you can also find thousands of reasons why you love your job. It is always a good thing to improve our live, to be better and better. But don’t forget to always enjoy what you do.
