The Wind Power

If you ever think to buy garden weathervanes to know the  wind direction in your garden, then it’s a really good idea. Since 5000 years ago, people have taken many advantages from wind. I bet that you have heard about Cleopatra. The ancient Egyptians used wind power to sail their ships on the Nile River. After that, people built windmills to grind their grain. Do you know the country that has a nuclear issue, Iran, was one of the first civilization that used windmills to process their foods? They were called Persia at that time. Later the Hollands and the American colonist improved the design of the windmill.

Wind basically is air in motion. The air can move since some area have different temperature. The land heats up more quickly than the water, so the warm air over the land expands and rises, and the heavier, cooler air over the water rushes in to take its place, creating winds. Wind is definitely a renewable energy source because as long as you have the sun shines, you will always have the wind.

People use the wind energy to generate electricity, not in the big scale that it can be used to light up a big city, but the progress is quite promising to be able to achieve that condition. But it is not just about the power that can help us, another thing that we have to pay attention from the wind is its direction. As I told you in the beginning of this article, a garden weathervanes will be able to help you to know the wind direction. If you work in a high risk area like I do, then knowing a wind direction is a must for you.

One of the reason why crude oil is categorized as hazardous substance is because it contains benzene, aromatic hydrocarbon that is classified as carcinogenic, a substance that can cause cancer. Even in the ambient temperature, hydrocarbon will be evaporated easily, emitting the hazardous substance to the atmosphere. Not all the unit  or equipments are designed fully closed and some area are having benzene level higher than the standard. Of course we are asking all the related employees to wear gas mask, to ensure that they will not inhale the benzene that can endanger their health in long-term period. But another mitigation measure that we should do is to know the wind direction by seeing the wind sock and to avoid taking position at the down wind. Wind sock and rooftop weathervane is two different thing but they have the same function. Knowing the wind direction in your garden perhaps not a really big thing, but in other area, it save your life.
