Will the “2012″ Really Happen to Us?

A few weeks ago, the cinema  buzzed over the new massive ‘disaster’ movie “2012”. A few years earlier, a more ‘realistic’ approach on the matter was eloquently shown by former US Vice President, Al Gore – “The Inconvenient Truth”. Those were the two ‘natures-fight-back-movie’ that held much of the attention of the world viewers. 2012 may have shown us an alternative of a global scale disaster caused by the sun activity, a disaster that may or may not happen with a little human interference in what causes it. While The Inconvenient Truth points directly at us as we are the main culprit in the disaster to come. A disaster the expert said to be unavoidable if we do not change the way we live right now.

2012If we notice on what’s happening in the world right now, perhaps the disaster is soon to come. From the data released at the Copenhagen Climate Conference, this past decade is the hottest since coordinating record keeping began at 1850 and this year is shaping up to be the fifth warmest year. The frightening thing is, according to Andy Pitman, of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia; “Given we are in a period of low solar activity, and have been through a sustained La Niña…2009 should have been a cool year” said Andy Pitman.

Recently, at the U.N. climate conference, Al Gore had said that by summertime 2014 the Arctic Ocean may be nearly ice-free. A projection way ahead than what the U.S. Government Agency forecasted eight months ago, where the U.S. Government Agency predicted the melting of the ice cap will happen by 2030. Though some scientist and expert said that the projection given by Al Gore is ‘too severe’ or ‘too dramatic’ but other researches previously also have projected that the melting is much quicker than 2030.

Without a doubt, the climatic changes took place right now is not getting any slower. This year and last year alone had been ranked as the second- and third- greatest ice melting. And things will not prove otherwise by the looks of it. Drastic moves should be done. Maybe our voices will not make it to the Climate Conference in Copenhagen, but we should spread the word of how our earth is not getting better by the minutes. Maybe from the numbers and theories, we should be able to predict or forecast of what was to come. Maybe from there we could get a fine and subtle solution that will benefit all, including our economic growth, which seems to be always at clash with environmental interest. Maybe from there countries who implemented the solution will stand firm to their commitment to save our planet while maintaining their economic growth. Maybe those changes will affect the earth and help it heal, before it’s too late. Maybe the disaster we see in the movie or what the experts predicted could be avoided.

It’s a lot of “maybe”, and it’s quite a long shot. But that’s all we got, aside from our hope that our leaders will unite and together we heal the earth. But then again, it’s just our hope.
